He looked down and realized he was. He shifted on the couch, supporting himself on his elbows, so embarrassed he didn’t know how to react. His face turned red as he looked away. He was still high enough to feel too weak to stand up.

Summary
For 1st year med student Dazai Osamu, excellence isn’t a goal — it’s a requirement for being allowed to exist. Raised by his father Mori, Dazai has learned that anything below 100% is failure, freetime is indulgence, and parental affection is something one has to earn. Trying to uphold these impossible standards, he gets confronted with how coping mechanisms meant to maintain control can lead to losing it.

"You didn't prepare properly," Mori cut him off. "Careless. Do you want to be a doctor responsible for patients dying because of such mistakes?"

"Then do better."That night, Dazai stayed up late, re-reading his textbook until the words blurred together, fueled by fear of what would happen if he made another mistake.
