Her father had tried to stamp these bad habits out of them, to very little avail; perhaps Gregory Edgeworth would have known better success.
Looking back on it, she would feel herself go cold with disgust. Stop trying, she wanted to say, wanted to slap herself across her face. Stop trying to hold it all in place. The issue being, with anger, that it burns out. When the knock at her door finally comes, hours later, Franziska is sitting quietly at her kitchen counter, shoulders hunched, gripping her elbows with her arms crossed in front of her. She’s kicking one foot against the cabinet below her, lightly. She’s done everything she can, already, she’s slammed the doors and thrown her bag into the front closet, hard, and kicked her shoes off, and stood under boiling water in the shower, and sat shaking on the couch, nearly physically holding herself together lest she do something worse, she has done the angry sobbing and held up one half of an imaginary argument while pacing her kitchen island in circles, she’s done all of it. So now she’s sitting at her kitchen counter, exhaustion a weight hung in her ribcage, watching the oven clock click closer to the trial she has in the morning.
And then the knock at the door.
Or, Miles Edgeworth returns from the dead. Franziska von Karma stands at the bottom of a canyon, and looks up.

He tucked the flowers into the vase and gave the still figure on the bed one last glance before getting ready to shimmy back across the ledge.
He had just shuffled away from the window when fingers as cold as his own suddenly wrapped around his wrist. He spun his head so fast he nearly lost his balance, but the grip on his wrist kept him steady against the wall.
Steely grey eyes latched onto his as Rei Todoroki leaned halfway out the window, holding onto him tight.

Hitoshi just grunts, sitting on his hands and swinging his legs underneath the bench since his legs don’t reach the floor. “From who?”
“Your English teacher,” Shouta deadpans. “You’ve been sleeping in classes?”
“Snitches get stitches,” Hitoshi says to him, very seriously.
“Don’t avoid the question.”
“But they do.”

Hawks uses his feathers to retrieve Hitoshi’s belongings, shaking his head. “No one called me,” Hawks says quietly, and before that could settle into Hitoshi’s lungs, continues: “I was . . . taking a flight and saw you.”
Cold seeps into the soles of his feet. “O-oh.”
“What’s your name, kiddo?” questions Hawks as he helps Hitoshi into his shoes, likely not trusting the way Hitoshi’s limbs trembled. There’s still a feather nestled into his clothes. A sharp, grounding grasp against the fabric. Hawks’ smile twitches at the sight of Hitoshi’s note, but he doesn’t bring attention to it. “Shit, kid, I—how old are—?” Hawks cuts himself off, exhaling. It hitches. “Okay. Okay.”
It hits Hitoshi, suddenly, that Hawks, for all that he is the Number 2 Pro Hero, is barely twenty-two. Hitoshi, likewise, is barely sixteen.
When Hawks decided to indulge in a 3 AM craving, he didn’t expect the boy on the roof—and the boy clearly didn’t expect him, either.
