The crying only intensified. “You’re dead,” Gem hiccupped. “Jimmy shot you.”
“Yeah,” Pearl agreed. “He did. And then I respawned. Here. On Hermitcraft.” She rubbed Gem’s back in soothing circles. “It’s safe here.”
Gem kept sobbing, so Pearl reached out and wrapped her arms around her friend. Gem leaned into the embrace and buried her face in Pearl’s shoulder. “You’re not dead?”
“I’m not,” Pearl confirmed. “Everyone’s okay.”
Or, what if the lifers lost their memories during the games? What if the Villies mourned Pearl for real?

Summary
Grian, bored, picked up a few large rocks and walked a few yards away to toss them at the ball. The ball hit an incline and rolled faster and faster, headed straight toward Scar. A couple of people noticed, and several eyes widened. Scar, though, was completely oblivious.
Oli B noticed from his spot outside the pit, and he started to shout something. “Ry ― I mean Scar!”
But the ball had already reached its destination. Scar looked down at it with a comically shocked expression. “Does that mean I died?”
“Yeah,” Grian answered, looking equally surprised. “I’m so sorry! I thought you’d notice it and get out of the way!”
“I thought it was just another trick!” Scar defended.

Summary
Gem threw her hands into the air exasperatedly. Winnie, who had stopped retching, glanced at her curiously. Gem bent down to stroke her.
“What do you eat, girl?”
Almost in response, the dog pricked her ears. Both went silent, and a barely audible sheep bleat sounded from across the forest. After a pause, Winnie's wolf instincts seemed to kick in, and she raced through the forest, Gem sprinting close behind. The puppy had surprisingly good stamina, and by the time Gem made it to the clearing, Winnie had made quick work of the sheep they'd heard. For some reason, though, she hadn’t eaten it yet. The dog stood staring at what appeared to be to be a normal cliff. Gem moved to stand behind her dog and saw something engraved on the stone. Something that gave her chills.
A symbol.
A symbol that, inexplicably, made her heart speed up.
Or, Gem got an invitation to join something called Hermitcraft with her friend Pearl. Also, she keeps getting weird flickers of déjà vu.

“XELQUA”, says one of the Watchers, the smaller of the two, wearing black-purple. “AT LAST, WE HAVE FOUND YOU.”
“–all day long!” finishes Grian, cheerily, and caps the verse with a bright, “Fuck off!” He extracts his hand from Pearl’s to summarily give both Watchers the finger.
“YOU WILL COME WITH US,” says the second, slightly taller Watcher.
“Eat shit and die,” says Grian, promptly. “I’m not going anywhere.”
(In which the Watchers come to retrieve Grian from the void, but are foiled by the twin powers of teeth and cursing. And friendship. But mostly teeth.)

Summary
Gem leans her whole body weight onto her staff, then collapses to the grass. “Pearl, I can’t…” she murmurs weakly. “I can’t walk. I don’t know what to do…”
Pearl’s voice is soft and kind. “I’ve got you. It’s alright.”
She lifts Gem into her arms with ease. Gem wraps her arms around Pearl’s neck and clings to her for dear life.
“Just hold on, my love,” Pearl whispers as she carries Gem through Mythland. “You’re gonna be alright. I’m getting you out of here.”
or: In an alternate universe, Jimmy could only save one. It's up to Pearl to rescue her partner from Xornoth's clutches and bring her back to safety.

“I’ve been trying to figure out how to reach her,” Saint Pearl admits.
Gem looks up from the pie filling she’s halfway through preparing and blinks in surprise. “I thought you never tried to visit the world below anymore.”
“I know. But she’s different.” Pearl grabs a spoon from the kitchen drawer and steals a spoonful of pie filling. “She’s basically my sister. I’ve got to say hello.”
Gem smirks. “And that’s all?”
“I’m not going to ask her if she’s in love with the ruler of Dawn, if that’s what you’re implying.” Pearl steals another spoonful of pie filling. “Oh, that’s really good. What is that, apple?”
“Golden apple and honey.” Gem moves the bowl out of Pearl’s reach with a grin. “I guess you’re right. We already know the answer.”
or: In one world, Pearl is a goddess, and Gem is her partner. In another, Gem is LARPing as a princess, and Pearl is transforming into somebody else. The two worlds might not be as distant as they seem.
