Summary
Sleep is a naturally occurring way for the body to heal. Without it wounds pile up, stress cannot be relieved as easily. And a lack of a break for the mind wears it down, until even simple tasks are impossible. Humans have attempted to push just how long they can go without sleeping, but health concerns have forbade any attempts from being formally recognized as offical. The health defects are as follows, but are not limited to; mood swings, a lack of cognitive awareness, and a severe impairment on decision making. As well as hallucinations of the auditory, visual, sensory, and even the olfactory (smell).
In testing done on rats, a question was posed. Just how long can a living being go without sleeping? If it cannot be safely tested on Humans, then rats will have to do, and they could theoretically go from there. But, testing only ever got as far as rats. As in only 11 days the first died, and the rest soon followed suite.
The final rat died on day 32.

Summary
Sleeping is a natural way for the body to recuperate following a long day. It helps the brain reset, the muscles relax and heal, and in general is a key component in a having a healthy life. Almost on par, if not more important, than working out, eating right, and making good decisions.
In scientific testing, rats were kept awake for as long as possible to study the effects of prolonged exhaustion of a species, and how that might affect humans. The goal was to see just how a living being reacts to the stress of such an event.
All testing rats died within 11 to 32 days.
(Abandoned. Yeah, yeah, I know, the 13 people who just scrolled through every hotline miami/MHA crossover are shitting themselves in sadness now. My bad, due to forces outside of my control, I had to stop being a alcoholic. And that lowkey killed my enthusiasm to write).
