Mel had thought her way right into a corner with only one option.
Feelings were messy, unpredictable things. She’d managed keeping them to herself this long, she could keep a handle on it with a one time perfunctory favor sex involved. She simply had to logic her way through it. Frank was her person. He would help her out because he was a good friend. The sex would be carefully carried out and rote. There would be no additional emotional attachment. Everything between them would go back to the way it always was and Mel could move on.
There would be absolutely no deviation.

She throws back her head and cackles, little snorts in her laughter that are kind of charming, actually. “Oh, god, don’t be. He dragged me to Pennsylvania, went and got hooked on drugs, and I’m pretty sure he’s been sleeping with his coworker. I’ve been waiting for this.” She grins a bit ferally. “Besides, I’m gonna be a hot divorcee, what’s not to love about that?”
Mel blinks, trying her best to adopt the sort of expression she uses when a patient tells her something particularly out of pocket. “Oh. That’s a lot,”Or, the one where Mel and Abby get stuck in an elevator.

“Those the same hands we let you operate in the ER with, Whittaker?”
Frank’s voice cuts through the din, not exactly booming but stern and authoritative. The group clams up as Frank deposits the two cocktails for Samira and Trinity on the table, out of the way of the beer spillage.
“I asked you a question.”
“I - uh - it was —“
“You need to watch what you’re doing. Someone could have gotten seriously hurt.” His tone is dripping in hostility and poor Whittaker wilts under the scorn. Santos’ mouth twists unpleasantly and she takes a deep breath like she’s revving up to go toe to toe with Frank. “I mean, seriously, what were you thinking —“
“Frank,” Mel interjects, if only to stop the shouting match that is about to erupt.
Frank turns to her, the tension leaving his face all at once. He studies her in that clinical way of his, scanning her body from head to toe, making his own mental diagnosis of what’s wrong and how to fix it. “Let’s get you cleaned up, yeah?”
Or, Frank is an asshole to everyone. Except when it comes to Mel. And Mel likes that.
