Summary
After the massacre at the gorge leading to the Nebakov fortress, certain events transpire differently: one, Godwin doesn't get to Henry and Hans on time. Žižka imprisons the young lord of Pirkstein and his faithful squire for a longer time, called away to quell new arising issues... And then, he discovers Toth's agenda, and throws him into the jail as well. Erik soon follows.
And as the fates are whores with a wicked sense of humour: they get separated. Henry lands locked in the cell with István—and Capon's stuck with Erik.
Dirty games play out, and cruelty flows free like blood.

Csoda!
A miracle. The boy was perfect. Unrefined and half-feral, yes, but with the right training he could become an excellent weapon. The weapon that would cut down István Tóth.

Summary
‘A horse must be broken before it can be ridden. But you ought to choose your mount carefully. Consider its purpose. A draft horse will be of little use to a racemaster, and a thoroughbred courser still less use to a farmer with a cart to pull. Teaching a carthorse to leap fences will destroy your homestead, and wasting a fine swift runner on a burdensome yoke will turn the beast vicious. You must choose the right horse for the job, and break it in, before you can set it to work. War is a messy, bloody business, and it takes a certain kind of man to weather it and come out the other side stronger. You have a talent for horses, for understanding them and ensuring that they understand you. I have the same talent, but for men of war.’
Erik is recruited for the 7th Cavalry following the Battle of Little Bighorn by Lieutenant Ištván Tóth. Twenty years later, they reunite when Erik is a deserter from the Mexican frontier and offers his services as a horse wrangler on the retired Ištván's ranch.

Summary
"What is the most important thing in a fight?" Istvan asked.
It was not pure strength, Erik knew. There was a man in Istvan's company, slender and hardly taller than Erik, who was so quick with a shortsword that he always outlasted heavily armored men in the training yard. Not skill, either. It didn't matter how often a man practiced or what he knew about the sword if his opponent was stronger, quicker, didn't have the sun in his eyes, had slipped into his quarters in the night, had planned ahead with poisons or reinforcements—
Well, there was more, but Erik realized that Istvan didn't necessarily mean a physical fight. Conversations were fights. Istvan said fighting with words was more fun than swords, because the field changed constantly. (Though Erik had seen him kill men with a longsword, and Istvan seemed just as pleased doing that.) Strength mattered in those fights, too, because a man could intimidate with his height and threaten with just a look.
The answer came to him. Erik sat up straighter.
"Advantage," he said.
Erik learns how to swim, how to wield a sword, and what kind of man he wants to be.

Summary
Regret gnarled at Ištván even as the world fractured around him into separate pieces. How many things had he left unsaid to Erik? He had recalled Henry’s voice cutting through the red haze in his mind – swearing to make Erik suffer, to split him open just as he had Ištván. His final breath had been spent on Erik’s name – a desperate prayer to God he no longer believed in.
And yet, God still had plans for him.

On summer nights, star of stars,
Orion's dog they call it, brightest
Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat
And fevers to suffering humanity.-

In the sweltering heat that threatens to devour him from the inside, Erik tries to come to terms with their newfound closeness.
Realizing his boy has grown into a man, Istvan is determined to do the right thing for once in his life. He will let Erik spread his wings, regardless of the dread that grips his heart at the thought.

After its all over, Henry starts to dream. Not the usual nightmares, but strangely realistic dreams where he watches Istvan and Erik's life together. And even though they should be just dreams, why does it feel like he's being slowly dragged to Hell with them?

Summary
“Penumbra (n.) — a part of a shadow where the light is not wholly gone, used especially of the half-shadow cast during an eclipse.”
Evil does not reproduce; it perfects itself. And the Lord does not halt wheels that men themselves insist on turning.
Some would argue whether Henry pushed or István leapt. But they should note, perhaps, that God kept His silence as ever.

Summary
A smudged figure waits in the corner of Erik's eye. Istvan is dressed in black, covered from head to toe with armored limbs and a heavy doublet, but he doesn't reek the way Erik does in the heat. If anything, he smells like nights in camp. Like woodsmoke and a chilly breeze. The comfortable scent of bodies in the same place for too long.
Istvan buys Erik a gift.

Hans could admit it here, where no one stood ready to prod his dignity for weakness: he missed Henry. Missed him with the helpless ache of a child left alone in an unfamiliar place. Three moonfulls since, grief had made its den of him; lingering where it pleased and inventive as ever in finding new ways to make him feel the fool.
Hans can’t let go. Erik brings back the sword and asks for the noose.

Summary
Ištván turned without another word and stepped back through the chapel doors, into the smoke-laced morning chill. The sky was pale with dawn now, weak light seeping through clouds and heavy mist, revealing the remains of what had still been a village before the night fell.
He knew he should’ve simply slit the boy’s throat the moment he found him. That would’ve been the smarter thing to do, for once, and perhaps even a small mercy. No names, no questions – just another corpse sprawled among many.
But he hadn’t. And now the boy had a name, and a voice, and eyes too old for his face.
