Summary
It started after the death of Uther, the possessiveness.
Maybe it’d always been there to some degree. Merlin blamed it on their destiny, the unbreakable umbilical cord that tied them together even when they physically existed on opposite ends of the kingdom.
After Uther’s death, though, the cord tightened on Arthur’s end and Merlin went willingly.

Summary
The disbelief knocked the air out of Arthur’s lungs, harsher than a fight or a battle wound ever did, like a bang straight to the chest. It was all he felt at first, and he wanted to double over with it, to scream that this couldn’t be either fair or true. Merlin couldn’t be a sorcerer—he just couldn’t. But it soon dissolved, and Arthur’s feet were steadied by abrupt smoldering rage, blinding the familiarity of the boy in front of him.
“Are you going to kill me, Arthur?” Merlin asked, a bittersweet smile on his lips, with the tip of Arthur’s sword flashing at his throat.

Summary
Merlin knew his go-to excuse of “going to the tavern” to explain his disappearances was always going to bite him in the arse. He just didn’t expect that one night while he was off doing magical things that said tavern would burn to the ground in a devastating fire and he would be presumed one of the victims.
Yep, this was going to be hard to explain.
