Day 4: Too Little, Too Late

He didn’t know that was the last thing he would say to him. The last time he’d see him. If he had, he’d say something better. Tell him that he loved him. Tell him that he wanted a proper future with him, something they had danced around but never truly explored. He’d say he loved his eyes. He’d take him to a secret alcove and just sit with him. He’d stargaze with him. He’d kiss him silly. He’d—

There were so many possibilities. So many things left unsaid and so many things left undone. But time was a cruel master, and wouldn’t let him live out any.

Varian was found dead at 16:27, just behind the alchemy shop.

    …

Hugo would do anything to save Varian.

But every attempt to change the outcome only tightens the loop around them both, until Hugo is forced to decide how far he’s willing to go to stop the death he can’t escape.

    Summary

If Varian had just let Hugo do his thing, they wouldn’t be in this situation. Now they were both trapped in a jail cell in some random town and were delayed in their search for the next trial until Yong and Nuru could bail them out.

And Hugo refused to face the other boy.

And Varian wouldn’t say a word.

    --

Or, after getting stuck in a cell with Varian, Hugo finds out there’s much more to the other alchemist than he thought he knew.
