The corner of Swanton and Dorner is swarmed with the usual faces of the morning rush. Women in various states of dress and distress mill about, pacing anxiously as they hiss into their phones, or stand like zombies as they scroll whatever social media they're brave enough to keep. Most nurse coffee, a couple tea; steam rising from chipped, donated mugs broadcasting a berth of local sports teams. You yourself carry nothing other than your new, state-issued phone, your mission today requiring only your memory and the sort of courage that leaves your stomach too twisted for caffeine.
The phone rings three times, shrill notes in your ear that stretch too long, give you so much time to back out that you nearly do. You're just pulling your phone away from your cheek when the note cuts out, a quiet rustling and a gruff voice on the other end keeping you pinned in place just those few seconds longer.
"Chief Swan."
Chief? You falter, on edge now. You can only think of one type of chief who would answer a phone like that and it makes you wary.
"Hi. Um… Charlie?
He sighs, impatient but not unkind. "This is he. How can I help?"
