Off the bat, Hopper just assumed that Mike coming along was one big plot to get back together with El. That’s what he’d been bracing for, at least; having El post up in he and Joyce’s room on an air mattress, keeping the door open three inches when she was hanging out with the boys in their room.
But that’s not what happens. Not what he thinks happens, at least.
Or, Hopper has a feeling about Will and Mike.

Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

Summary
Mike didn't even want to go in the first place, honestly.
El and Dustin managed to convince him to tag along despite his determination to refuse, and he was quite miffed, to be honest. He considered himself to be a pretty normal guy; a little anti-social, a bit uptight due to his conservative upbringing. But he was normal. And he was going to keep it that way, no matter what his friends tried to do to get him to loosen up.
But then he was stuck at a five day hippie-filled, groovy festival called the Midsummer Splendour, full of psychedelic music, drugs, peace and love. And he meets Will, possibly comes to some realisations that he wasn't a very normal person after all, and finds friends that he would be bonded to for life.
