    Sometimes Pikachu doesn't feel like a very good trained pokemon.
    Trained pokemon are supposed to listen, and even now Pikachu doesn't totally listen to Ash all of the time. Trained pokemon are supposed to keep an eye on their trainers, not get distracted and stop focusing on them.
    Trained pokemon aren't supposed to let their trainers get hurt.
    Which Pikachu was obviously terrible at doing, considering how it's trainer was now, curled up on his sleeping bag, face so red from a fever at his cheeks look as red as Pikachus, he keeps throwing up and Pikachu is surprised there's anything left in his stomach.

    or
    ash gets sick, and pikachu panics.
