    Everybody--including Steve himself--had been surprised when he'd turned out to be an alpha. The other boys had pegged him for an omega, and a bad one at that; one of the many jokes at his expense was that Barnes only liked him because Steve was even lower on the food chain than an omega with delusions of beta-status. Steve can still remember the feral grin Bucky’d given him after they’d heard that one for the first time, blood on his teeth from his split lip, and the way his voice had cracked when he’d said “I like you for a lot more’n that, Rogers.”

    The year is 2012. Loki has vanished with the Tesseract, and Manhattan is a blazing wreck. A very tired Steve Rogers goes home and meets another very tired Steve Rogers.

    Or, the one where Steve saves the mind stone for last and decides to fuck the timeline beyond all recognition, which regrettably involves crawling delicately up Hydra's asshole and less regrettably involves showering a very confused Bucky Barnes with affection.

    Ever since Steve could remember, he always wanted to do what was right. So orphaned young and alone, Hydra offered him a chance to be part of something more, to help free the world, to save it.

    Steve took it without question.

    Years later, he found himself at war with the Americans and the notorious Soldier, slowly coming to the realisation that things were not what they seemed to be at all. But time had never been kind – least of all to Steve – and it was way too late for regrets.

    (Or the AU where Steve was Hydra but somehow ended up becoming a hero anyway, because some things were just inevitable)

    Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are fire and gasoline; it never ends well.
