Wylan shook his head. He hated when he shut down. Being unable to verbally communicate only served to make his dyslexia feel like more of a deficit. Anyone else would be able to write out their thoughts, but Wylan just sat there, paralyzed, staring off into space. He steeled himself as his father’s words frantically tried to chip away at his walls, trying to find a way to worm through the cracks in the armor his therapist had helped him build.
He closed his eyes and focused on taking deep breaths. This time, his therapist’s voice rang out in his head. In for five, hold for five, out for five. Again. In for five, hold for five, out for five. One more time, Wylan, you’re doing great. In for five, hold for five, out for five.
Wylan slowly opened his eyes, focusing on his surroundings. The feeling of the black couch he was sitting on, the one he helped pick out at IKEA. The Keurig on the kitchen counter. The smell of Jesper’s deodorant. Jesper.

To feel safe.However, life is more adventurous and unsafe than he ever thought it would be, especially when he finds a band he longs to be a part of. Quickly he yearns to learn how to fall in love with life again. And possibly someone else in the process.
