Summary
Dan Heng is turned towards the colossal moon slumbering on the sky's pitch-black bedsheets. The moonlight illuminates his bone-chilling calm and freezes it in an elegant picture frame. Blade catches his own staring and cleaves it in twain.
The mara won't accompany him to the oceanfront. It's so freeing that he feels hollow and nauseous.
Dan Heng rises, shakes snow off his person, and leaps down from the ledge, bridging the distance between himself and Blade. There's enough light that Blade can see his every feature with striking clarity. His pupils are blown wide, unnerving compared to the narrow slits he bears in broad daylight. He looks distinctly human this way.
Nothing is said for a long while. They both know what needs to be addressed.
Blade thickly swallows his sickness right when Dan Heng beats him to it with, "I'm sorry about—"
"Don't." Blade's next breath impales his lungs. "I'm… sorry. For leaving the way I did."
Feeling guilty over departing for death on harsh terms, Blade invites Dan Heng to a private bath in Inkford Hermitage, apprehensive about what binds them together and which foundations they exist on.
