    Summary

Arthur wakes up. So many of his memories lately start with this. He wakes up, and everything hurts, and John is saying something—but John’s not saying anything this time, and there’s someone in this room with Arthur that sounds a lot like his friend.
    --
John’s voice always rose and fell, low into a deep growling bass and high into a rough yell. But one constant, one word that never sounded different no matter the tone was how he said Arthur’s name. Emphasis on the ‘ar’ and ‘ur’, the ‘th’ in the middle always smooth like wind. Other people tended to hiss that sound, the ‘th’. With John, it seemed he knew exactly how to say it to make it glide.

Based on all that, he deduced it was in fact John saying, “Arthur!”

    Summary

Conventional wisdom would have one think that a lifetime of cultivation and night hunts would have prepared Lan Wangji for such a scene. Had it been a malevolent entity, an out of place ghost or demon, or even a mischievous but ultimately harmless spirit, they would be right. However if Lan Wangji was correct, and he very much suspected he was, the entity in front of him exceeded what could be classified as spiritual or supernatural and landed squarely into mythical and fantastical.

    Jiaoren.

    *****
Fifteen years after the war against the Wens, Lan Wangji stumbles upon a heavily wounded jiaoren while supervising a junior hunt and takes him home to dote upon him. When word gets out about the silver-eyed beauty's residence in the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji, now more commonly known as the benevolent Hanguang-Jun, just may have to remind the cultivation world just how far he is willing to go to protect what's his.

    Summary

The first thing Wei Ying became aware of was cold steel at his throat.
    Not one blade—several.
    He did not move.

Sleep still clung to him, heavy and disorienting, but instinct burned through it fast enough. His eyes cracked open to darkness cut by lantern light, and beyond it, the rigid silhouettes of Gusu Lan disciples. White robes. Swords steady. Not trembling.
    Not a mistake, then.

Wei Ying let out a slow breath, careful not to shift against the edge pressing lightly into his skin. “Well,” he said, voice rough with sleep, “this is a new way to wake up.”

    No one laughed.
That, more than the swords, told him something was very wrong.

“You will come with us,” one disciple said. Young. Formal. Afraid—but hiding it well. “You are to be detained and questioned.”

“Questioned?” Wei Ying echoed. His mind raced, sifting through the previous day. Punishments—yes. Lan Wangji standing over him like a silent judge. Copying rules until his wrist ached. Kneeling until his legs went numb. Nothing new, nothing unusual, nothing that should end with… this.

He frowned. “Did I break a new rule I haven’t heard of yet?”

    Ch 38
"Once accepted, attachment ceased to behave like emotion and became incorporated into principle itself. Distance did not diminish it. Silence did not weaken it. Opposition only forced it inward, where it settled more deeply until devotion and nature became difficult to distinguish from one another."

In some ways this is a good showing of how oppression works within systems & in some ways it's the story version of breaking a horse (with actual breaking!) You manage to get extraordinarily far in before the time travel even becomes readily apparent, and then it becomes a Very Good character breakdown of the Lans. There's also a ton of weight given to LXC & LWJ's father, which is actually amazing, since his shadow lingers in canon & we get to see a pretty perfect extrapolation of how that looks in this text.
The pairing for me was actually kind of a jumpscare, mostly because our canon pairing is being actively managed by pressures outside themselves who actually consider it as a variable relevant to thier goals. There's definitely a version of this that's maybe not so bleak, but the perspective instead feels suffocating because the options are so controlled.
That said, while I do think it's an excellent peice, it's almost certainly written or edited with AI: I love & loathe it in equal measure.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A pretty perfect little series in that it starts off properly terrible, doesn't wallow, and only gets better from there. I love that there was a bit of a twist & that the author gave us a WWX who had a reason to stand his ground, but sad and difficult. LWJ is such a perfect ride-or-die too, and really holds things down so they can get better.
A good reread when I wanna run the gamut of hurt/comfort. One of the best.
