"Good news is it could be worse," Vash tells him. "I don't think it hit anything vital at the angle it went in. The worst should be the chance of infection and that it's probably going to be hard to reach."
A sarcastic huff is the only thing Wolfwood can manage to give him in reply. Lord have mercy, he's tired. Can't he close his eyes a little?
"I told you—you need to stay awake, Wolfwood!" Vash snaps. He presses on the wound roughly and Wolfwood's eyelids fly open.
"S'rry."
The cruel touch immediately turns to soothing strokes to Wolfwood's side.
"No, I'm the one who's sorry," Vash says. " What I was going to say was that the bad news is that I saw those bandits still snooping around the outskirts of town. They might be trying to wait us out, but you never know if they'll get impatient and come looking."
Wolfwood throws himself in the line of fire between a crowded diner and a bounty hunter looking to collect on Vash's head. With his ampules broken in the fall and a shotgun slug to the abdomen, Vash somehow drags them both back to their motel. Wolfwood wonders how they'll patch him up enough to make it out of town alive.

“Since when the hell did you have a 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘬?” Wolfwood demands, feeling a bit crazy as Vash ducks his head and tries to hide his face by turning it to stare at the wall. “Is that seriously what that is? Are you 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥?”
“This is from earlier!” Vash swore back, face as red as his coat, neck bent and nearly nose-to-nose. “Give me a break, I’m not used to this!”
“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯?”

Wolfwood learns some things about himself. And then some things about Vash. They learn together - one could almost call it romantic.

“U-Uhm, hello? Some–is anyone there?”
Robert pauses just in the doorway out of the kitchen, frowning. What the hell was Waterboy doing calling in? Everyone was dismissed hours ago.
Robert clicks the little button on the headset. “Waterboy? What’s up?”
Only then does he start slowly making his way back to his desk. The lights are all off, save for the lamp at the corner of his desk, and the warm, dim glow does nothing to help his exhaustion. “W–uh. Hey! Robert, yes–yeah. So I’m just. Well, I-I have a sort of, you know, situation.”
OR Robert's trying to finish up some late-night assignments. Waterboy is a disaster. It works out for them.
