    Summary

With a very calculated and deliberate gesture, Harrow threw her finger forward and dug it between two of Gideon’s ribs. The taller woman’s jaw flew open and her body bent over on its own, to which she hugged herself without a sound, every inch of her too focused on the pain she was feeling to react in any other way.

“Every second I spend in your company is a knife buried in my chest."

Gideon looked up, eyes half closed in a grimace, to find Harrow’s face to be at the same height as hers now that she was folded in over herself, courtesy of those infernal sticks she called fingers.

“Every second I am forced to converse with you ( - who the fuck talks like that, painfully interceded Gideon, dizzy with pain - ) I feel my IQ being slowly dragged down by your pathetic attempts at communication. Did you know? I actually kind of admire your ability to ignore the ancient purpose of words for information sharing, and instead use them to somehow worsen the preexisting silence. Yet my admiration is nowhere near grand enough for me to want to stand your company for even one second more than necessary.”

Gideon found her breath again and shakily replied with a grunt. “Cool. I’ll see you at five then.”

    Summary

Gideon froze on hands and knees as the gun dug into her stomach, just above her hip.

Beneath her, the woman sucked in rasping breaths made all the more difficult by the skull affixed overtop her face. Gideon could see the sharp lines of her chin, and the curve of her lower lip, and nothing else; the skull’s teeth and cheekbones obscured all other features, and the gaping sockets revealed darkness interrupted by only the briefest glimpse of the whites of the woman’s eyes.

Gideon bared her teeth, breath coming fast and tight.

“Now just why’n the hell you gotta go and-”

“Why do I have to–wait, hold on–”

“Yeah, why do you have to go sneaking up on me, damnfool y’are–”

    “Wait–Griddle?”

The whites of those skull-socketed eyes grew wider. Gideon felt her stomach tighten, a welling of dread like the tickle of scorpion claws felt on the legs.

    “... Ain’t no damn way.”

    Summary

    “Fuck, it’s that bad?”
“Worse,” Pyrrha says. “But you should take it. It’s a career-starter if I’ve ever seen one. Nine weeks on the West leg of the tour, opening for a First House band.”
“Say the name. Say the name right now. Say the name of the band, say the name. Dve, say the name of the band.”
“SARPEDON,” Pyrrah says, with the reluctance of someone speaking the name of a long-forgotten god whose dedicants worship by pissing just left of the toilet.

Nine weeks touring with a nu-metal band they hate. How bad could things possibly get for the Rocked Tomb? Drummer Gideon Nav, bassist-vocalist Harrowhark Nonagesimus, keyboardist Palamedes Sextus, and guitarist Camilla Hect are determined to find out.

    Summary

The day after Akemi arrives in LA on a greyhound with a backpack half-full of a handle of her father's best whiskey, she wakes up on a beach, colder than she expected to be, to an ash-black sky and the red unblinking eye of the sun. There's a fire in the hills. She thinks she’s died for a second, and what scares her is the prospect that there is an after—that’s always what’s scared her, the is of things, not the possibility of isn’t.
