Summary
November arrives, squally and wet. The trees are shaken bare by the wind, the leaves whirling about in the gusts when one walks up to the pavilion. The house’s windows rattle in their frames.
Tharkay hasn’t spent the winter in Scotland for twenty years, more. He tells himself firmly that this is nothing compared to the journey across Russia, or their miserable chase over the Alps. But it’s cold, and sullenly dark by mid-afternoon, and his knuckles throb, dully, with the damp.
Tharkay and Laurence’s first autumn, post-canon.

Summary
It had been three weeks—three of the happiest weeks of Laurence’s life, each day bathed in a kind of surging joy he had long since given up any hope of experiencing in this lifetime—when things began to go awry.

Summary
The years were speeding up, of that there was no doubt. But where once Laurence had marked their turning by the height and wildness of the currents of the oceans or the air, and the ebb and flow of military campaigns, his seasons now took a more domestic character. They were delineated by the nighttime tumult of lambing, or the first fine evening that after-dinner drinks could be enjoyed outside Temeraire’s pavilion, the deadheading of roses or the smell of the autumn’s first peat fire.
Laurence, now a retired gentleman of some means, is able to mark his friend’s birthdays as he has always wished.

Summary
This is a reference guide intended to help writers of Regency-era stories by providing a quick place to check whether a certain phrase was in use in the era, and if so, how it was used. The earliest attestation dates of phrases that postdate the Regency era might also make this guide useful to writers of neo-Victorian fiction.
