Summary
When the crew of the Reliant captures the Amitie and the dragon egg it carries, Captain Will Laurence is set ill-at-ease—not because he is unfamiliar with dragons, but rather the opposite. For, over a decade ago following an injury aboard the Shorewise, he discovered he bore a curse, one that would cause him to awake from his dreams as something other than human, if ever his attentiveness slipped. He was a weredragon.
But then the hatchling Temeraire chooses him as his Captain, and the course of his life is forever altered, to become an aviator of His Majesty's Aerial Corps...at least by day. By night, the question of his nature remains quite up in the air.

Laurence could feel the familiar sweat of awkward social interactions breaking out on his forehead and hands. But it was not even his fault; how was he supposed to know this bloke's last name when Temeraire introduced him differently! Now that Tenzing - Mr. Tharkay, damn it! - was standing next to Temeraire Laurence could feel his hawk-like eyes boring into him. He didn’t like the feeling. Not in the slightest. It felt like Mr. Tharkay knew Laurence had just called him by the wrong name again in his mind.

Summary
He walked slowly through the dark and empty hallways, the moon throwing the scene into blue tones and his footsteps echoing around him. Laurence’s mind kept carefully blank.
He passed Tharkay’s study, candlelight was spilling out from under the door. It looked delicate and frail, and while Laurence looked it flickered and died.
It is late, Laurence thought looking at the dark spot the light had left, the hallway felt suddenly a lot colder.
He continued to his own room, not lighting a candle to guide his way.In which Granby tries to be a good friend, and Temeraire is more aware of his captain's mental state than people thought.

Excerpt- "Laurence pulled back from Tharkay and Emily, struggling to stand on his own as he gripped his head. He found himself on the ground once more, nails digging the earth as the fire continued blazing through his veins.
They watched Laurence continue to yell in agony, and then they saw his shirt rising from his back and it was ripping from whatever was trying to get out of him. The shirt burst and then a pair of long, golden-scaled wings stretched out as tall as the trees around them with blood painted everywhere."
