I nearly overcame my anxiety and gave it to him a hundred different times. Once I made an offhand joke and he laughed so genuinely, his handsome face blooming into an openness that his cultivated persona so rarely allows. For a moment I was pulled from my distraction by the conviction that it was only the nerves of the moment that lead me to doubt the value he places on my company, and I nearly reached into my pocket on the spot. And every time his face fell slightly when my preoccupation denied him the attention he sought, I wanted to present my gift at once and prove that whatever my faults may be, thinking too little of him is not one of them.

Summary
He was always alive. The death was a trick—Bunny knows this now, but it feels like a resurrection all the same. Raffles’ passion is not just an artist’s passion but the passion of the Christ. Risen. Though nothing about him has changed, so maybe Bunny is the changed one. Maybe he needed Raffles to rise again so that his faith, his urgency, his priorities could be restored.

I had never made any secret to Raffles of my adoration for him—that is, I had not said it outright, for that I knew would embarrass even him. Not that I expected him to show it, for in addition to an unflappable aplomb, he had kindlier instincts than he would ever admit to. But the most tactful rebuff in the world could not but pain me, and he would be sorry for it.
But he knew.
So I supposed, at any rate, until Currier Warnham came back from France...
