“Have you ever set foot in a kitchen…? I don’t know how much you’re making, but this should probably be enough.”
“Thanks,” the boy sheepishly replied, giving him a small, embarrassed smile this time. Midori wondered which one he preferred of the two. “My mom is cooking, but we only moved in recently, and she heard about this place from one of the neighbours, so she sent me to buy some things.”
Ah. That made sense, then - they just moved in. Midori resisted the urge to ask where, as he refused to let the conversation become more long-winded than it needed to be.
“Hey,” the boy said. “What’s your name?”
Midori pondered on the consequences of letting him know, but his curiosity got the better of him. He wouldn’t admit it, but the boy’s reactions were surprisingly entertaining, and somewhat unpredictable at that. He took the money, hands unintentionally brushing against his, “Takamine. Takamine Midori.”
“Oh! So the greengrocer is named after you!"
