He’s sorting through inventory—laughing and cursing at Hal’s outrageous labeling system; Boobs for B and so on—when the front desk phone rings. “Lantern Mech’s Incorporated, we got the grease for your slippery needs.”
“That… is not the greeting. Didn’t I write it down?” Wally’s voice is sleepy, half-slurred. There’s rustling of voices in the background, the high-pitched wheeze of a child’s laughter.
“People love my greeting.”
“No, it sucks. Have you-”
“Yes.”
Wally huffs into the phone. It crackles in Kyle's ear, an incompatible sound to the real thing; he wonders what Wally's breath would feel like exhaled against his neck, if his breath would smell like bubblegum he chews.

Summary
Tim Drake never actually wanted to become part of the Robin-Batman-vigilante outfit. No, really. But the last Robin up and died, and now Batman is going crazy, and no one else is doing anything about it, so...Tim decides to become Robin. He might as well, right? At the very least it'll give him something to do while his parents are gone.
Still, Tim's not taking up the mantle until he can put a couple of things in order. Step one? Making sure the Joker can't get it into his head to kill another Robin. Not ever again. (Good thing Tim's not the one with a 'no killing' rule.)
And then after that? Well, after that it's only just a matter of keeping Batman from learning Tim's identity and subsequently chasing him off. Not until Bruce can get back on his feet and pick a new Robin, a real one this time. Easy-peasy.

fic so good my brain is exploding 3000 times per second
too long to be a comfort fic unless i remember that the second half is where i personally find the most satisfaction
last half of chapter 21 has me stimming like crazy AHAHAHAHHAHAHAH
obsessed the dynamic between the characters
i have to reread this in the far future when it isnt 1am and i can fully consciously appreciate the pure handcrafted genius of every single line in this fic
