Summary
Above the heart, hobbits carried the visible manifestations of their friendships, family ties and romantic relationships in the form of markings which grew like flowers on their chests.
Thinking that the Dwarves of Thorin's company will never forgive him, Bilbo taps into the hobbits' green magic at great risk to his life and shows everyone that nature is not only gentle and kind, but has thorns, and that the Bonds between him and the Dwarves are not so easily broken than as would have thought.

Bilbo, who realized that he hadn't responded to the dwarf's earlier inquiry, quickly nodded, averting his eyes down toward the sets of weapons before him. "Oh, yes!" Bilbo forced himself to look back up, not wanting to appear rude. "I was just - er, admiring the view."
The dwarf - and he really should ask for his name, how rude of him! His father would be rolling in his grave at his behavior - paused in the rearranging of the set of throwing knives. Bilbo observed how he straightened up - and it very well could have been his imagination, but he could have sworn he saw his complexion flush and pinken. "...I see," was his slow response, seeming to be at a loss for words.

All of the Company can see the tears flowing out of their Hobbit’s eyes, and before any of them can react, he bolts out of the tent. Even Dwalin, in all of his years as a guard cannot stop him despite being right at the entrance of the tent. Each Dwarf is stunned as they can do nothing but watch their Hobbit run out.
After what seems to be about hours, but was probably nothing but a few minutes, Kili looks at his uncle and says, “You idiot.”
