It wouldn’t be so bad if she was alone in Jackson like she was in Boston. She’d figure out where she fit and she wouldn’t really care if people liked her. She’s done it before when they made her switch schools.
But she’s not. She’s here with Joel, and she doesn’t want him to be embarrassed by her. She doesn’t want him to regret this. To regret her.

Summary
Five times Joel offers to braid Ellie's hair, and one time Ellie asks him to.

“So you’ve been asking people for, what, tips?” Ellie asked.
“Yep," Joel said. "All done.”
She raised her free hand to her hair, brushing her fingertips over the braid with her head bowed, so he couldn’t see her face. “But…why?”
He plucked the notebook from her hand and rested his palm on her head, fingertips brushing her forehead. If he couldn’t see her frown, he could at least feel it. “Because that’s what dads do for their daughters, kiddo.”
With a shaky inhale, she whirled to hug him, pressing her face into his hip. He rested his hand on the back of her head. Sooner or later, she’d get used to him referring to her like that. She’d had this same reaction when he let her look over her school registration forms to find he’d put her last name down as Miller and marked himself as her dad.
Sure, he sometimes still got misty-eyed about it, but he was better at hiding it.

“I don’t really get it,” she said, “but I trust you.”
Joel blinked down at her, wearing that same expression from last time: like he wished she didn’t trust him at all. But then he wiped it away and refocused on the road ahead of them, a long brown ribbon unspooling over the gently rolling hills. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Ellie. You know that, right?”
“Yup. Thought that was already established, given I trusted you to watch my back during the clicker swarm, but—” She shrugged. “You got me this far. I trust you’ll get me even farther.”

Summary
Joel and Ellie arrive in Jackson ready to live, not just survive, but it isn’t all smooth sailing. When Tommy first arrived in Jackson and thought he’d never see his brother again he confessed all his, and Joel’s, sins for everyone to judge. That, combined with the state Ellie is in when Joel and Ellie arrive, means Jackson wants to take Ellie away from Joel and find her “proper” parents.
Joel and Ellie don’t want to separate, but neither of them are ready to get back on the road just yet. Ellie endures family after family trying to make her stay while Joel experiences a fear over 20 years old: being separated from his daughter and fighting for custody.
Both of them have to define what they mean to each other after, and if Jackson can be their home after all.
