Summary
Bucky Barnes made a name for himself as the attorney who could get anyone off, but he still lives by the saying, "Innocent until proven guilty." Steve Rogers finds himself on trial for multiple homicides but he swears he was only trying to protect a girl. Bucky's been in this business long enough to know when someone's innocent, and Steve is innocent. Steve already feels like a monster and Bucky's worried this guy's going to lay himself on the sword come his trial. So Bucky offers up another course for punishment:

“They lied to you. I lied to you. You died like you were supposed to and that was the end of it. But you’re back,” Bucky’s voice lifts helpless, disbelieving, “You’re alive. And you need to know. That you’re not who you think you are. You’re an orphan. Your mother gave you up the day you were born. They found you in the orphanage and the tests started right away. They never stopped testing you. They made you sick so you’d find a way to survive. They sent the bullies so you’d learn to fight.”
“What are you talking about? Who’s ‘they’?” Steve’s voice is too sharp.
“Erskine. Zola. Hydra before it was Hydra,” Bucky gestures through the air, “They’ve always had us, Steve. From day one.” His eyes focus on Steve’s face, “You’ve always been a science experiment.”
“Bucky,” Steve voice is dismayed, “That doesn’t— Why would they make me sick?”
Bucky looks at him for a second. “Blond hair, blue eyes. You had all the right ingredients. But Erskine knew it was what was inside that counted,” Bucky knocks two fingers against his chest and Steve realizes they’re shaking, “He didn’t just find a guy who would jump on a grenade, Steve,” Bucky’s eyebrows lift, “He made one.”

"Please come get me", the familiar voice crackles through the line, and Steve nearly drops the phone.
His throat works, but he can’t get out the words for a moment. Is he crying? “Bucky? Buck? Is that…is that you?” No response but what sounds like a muffled sob. ”Bucky, where are you. Where are you. Tell me what’s around you.” Steve glances at the clock: 3:02 am.
There’s the sound of a shuddery breath, and then the line goes dead.
