Flins rereads these words in Varka's near-incomprehensible scribble. He hears them in Varka's voice. He sees Varka's smile. Feeling his mouth curl upwards in spite of himself, Flins wonders when Varka will tire of asking questions to which he already knows the answers.
After a run-in with Flins at the lighthouse, Varka suggests they write letters to each other to stay in touch. Their friendship grows into something much larger than either of them had initially imagined.

Since one fell first and the other fell harder. In the beginning, they made sure to be with each other for the ups and downs.
