Summary
When he arrived in Fhirdiad with nothing more than the clothes on his back, Dedue had constant dreams about family. Instead of wrestling with any violent flashbacks, however, he found himself greeted by a doorway to the mundane reality of his past captured in acute perfection. Not violent, yet nonetheless cruel: as Dedue woke with tear-soaked pillows, it was as though he had been ripped from home a second time, a third time, however many times it would take to kill a person anew.
Then the vassal would wash his face, get dressed, and come see Prince Dimitri in his room.

Sleep does not come easily that night. Dimitri clings onto the sound of Dedue’s words, his gentle timbre like the low crackle of a hearth fire, while all around him the dead conflagrate with noise.
Together. Together. Was all of this because, among the victims of that night… There was still one missing person?
It’s been a worm wriggling in the back of his skull, silent and cold, a guilt like ice beneath fiery grief. She’s standing there, now, behind the clamoring horde of phantoms, still and white, staring.
His stepmother. Her body was never brought home.It is Dimitri's duty to bring rest to the dead. He cannot do it alone.

Summary
Fodlan has never quite grown past glorifying military might, still mandating service for descendants of the old political families, and freshly embarking in active warfare with the Agarthans. There is little sympathy for a whistleblower. Despite this, Dimitri made the decision to speak out against the actions of his own unit, making them known to the public. His reward was retaliation and mutilation, and subsequent abandonment by the medical system meant to help him recover.
It has been three years since Dedue saw Dimitri - a man of Duscur could not be permitted to follow his own partner to the Academy, whatever his reasons for doing so - and eight months since anyone had heard from him. Until, that is, he is contacted by Edelgard, Dimitri's estranged step-sister, who has followed paper trails and whisper networks to Dimitri's last known location. To Dedue, there is only one course of action: immediately doing everything in his power to bring Dimitri home.
