He doesn’t quite know how to explain it until he looks down and sees Nicky’s pajama pants and Nicky’s tan chest where his body should be. Grant’s panic spikes to the ceiling. What the f**k? What the f**k!? What the f**k. He’s two layers of wrong and he doesn't like any of it.
“Nicholas, where are you?” Grant asks again. He’s scared that he already knows the answer.
“Right where I always am,” Nicholas says, his voice shakes only a little behind the irritation. ”What are you doing here?”

“I maybe told my dad that you had been staying late in the studios,” Grant explained after a beat and Sparrow sighed before he could even finish. “And he got worried and told your dad, and he got really worried and asked me if I would walk you home to make sure you’re safe.”
Sparrow closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose with two fingers. He was sure he was smearing charcoal across his face, but he hardly cared. “I’m 21 and we’ve all received combat training, I can take care of myself.”
Grant snickered and rolled the chair closer, letting his arms drape over Sparrow’s shoulders. “But you’re so little! You’re petite! You’ll get picked up by strangers on the street!”
“I could kick your ass.”
“Even without Lark?”

Going to college was a good thing. Sparrow was living a normal life, he was striving for achievement, and he wasn't sitting around San Dimas with their dad and too many weapons. He was happy here, really. The fact that he missed Lark like a phantom limb didn't mean he wasn't happy.

“Aww, you like it?” Nick teases, his eyes sparkling in mischief. Before Sparrow has the chance to retort though, he’s complying, scooting back over to where Sparrow’s still sitting, leaning against his bed, to tangle his hands back into Sparrow’s hair with a laugh.
“Nobody ever plays with my hair anymore,” Sparrow admits, and he sighs into the touch this time, fully leaning into it like the attention-starved wolf he is. “I like it.”
“That’s a shame– you really do have soft hair, it’s cute,” Nick comments, and then he makes a squeaky noise in the back of his throat, like he’s choked on his own words. “I mean, of course you’re cute, but– I mean–”

The original story starts vaguely like this: A trans girl vaults the wall separating two sibling schools: Cerrial Academy and St. Grey’s. St. Greys, her previous school, is all-boys. Cerrial Acad is all-girls. You pickin up what I’m putting down here?? Yeah? Okay.
Translated to DNDads, Nick is trans and vaults over to St. Grey’s. He’s taken in by a few students to ensure his enrollment and safety (in their time, the school staff is iffy about trans rights. FOR SHAME).I initially planned on making Nick son of… the sun (lucifer? little sunshine? get it? sorry)… but the original girl was demigod of fire, and that story arc is literally so voluptuous for Nick, so. Yeah. I can’t promise I’ll get there in this fic but the thought was there. The thought IS STILL here.

Sparrow hums thoughtfully, and his brows furrow together as he glances down at the ticket. “...it’d just be the two of us?” he asks, his voice coming out soft, quiet.
“Just the two of us,” Nick confirms, and he grins, nudging Sparrow with his elbow. “What, you afraid of some one on one time with yours truly?”
“Afraid of you? Never,” Sparrow snorts, and his expression blossoms more into the Sparrow that Nick is less familiar with; his eyes brighten, and his lips quirk into a teasing smile. “Sure, I’ll go. Pick me up at 6?”
“When you phrase it that way, you make it sound like I’m asking you out,” Nick complains, even as something tugs inside of his chest. Still, he nods, and gives Sparrow another playful nudge to his shoulder. “But yeah, I’ll see you then. Wear something cool!”
