Summary
In December of 1812, near the border of what would one day become Lithuania and Belarus, a soldier of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armée was hanged for desertion. There's just one small problem: it should have never happened.
What was the chain of events that led to that execution? And what happened after? Did it have something to do with the powerful men who rode with Napoleon, the ones whose decisions determined life or death for Sébastien Le Livre and countless others?
This is a story of The Old Guard from the point of view of one of those men, a story about a forger-turned-infantry sergeant and the bravest of the brave.

It wasn't so bad being dead, Jean-Pierre decided eventually. He didn’t have any responsibilities, no daily drudgery to struggle with. He got to travel the world unseen, watching the years slip by as an invisible voyeur. That was nice.
Every ghost, however, needed something that tied them to the world of the living, something that kept them tethered. It could be a crumbling manse, a street corner, a train car, or a favorite childhood toy. It was always something of great importance to the dead, even if it wasn’t immediately apparent why.

Nile Freeman's had a good life. She's got a wonderful husband, two lovely daughters, and she's using her arts degree in a way she didn't expect, but it's a living. They even managed to find a house in Santa Monica at a reasonable price.
She doesn't think about her time in Afghanistan much. It's a decade and a half in her rearview mirror now. She saves that for the biweekly veterans support groups. Her life's been the best she can make it. Some might even call it charmed.
Then Nile Freeman dies for the first time. She's forty-two years old.
