You remembered the smell of sanitizer, the blank feeling when everything was white. The goosebumps as your mother ran her fingers along your arms. She didn’t believe, but prayed you’d get out, be okay.
You don’t realize you’ve taken your last breath until you take another—in a different universe, unfamiliar yet too familiar. You notice the familiarity only when you see a tall, broad-shouldered blond with a radiant smile.
“The townfolk told me of your navigation skills. I’d like you to join us.”
“Yes, I’ll come!”
You never tell him you already knew him, his story, his name. You first learned of him from a video game in your teens. Never fully waking from the dream of being in a video game, you follow his footsteps until he stops, looks back, and waits.
“I can’t believe you actually… like me.”
“It didn’t surprise me when I realized it.”
