But for this to happen to them, to the man who had proudly announced that he would be the Pirate King, and his invincible crew?
It didn’t seem real for this to happen to his precious friend—no, his family—whose fallen bodies he could see from where he lay.
He was dying, and that didn’t matter. Things that shouldn’t have happened had happened, and now the people, like the ships that had been his homes, would never see the light of day again.
As he slowly let go and thought that there was nothing left to fight for, he saw a bright light pierce the blinding night from the dark wreckage that had been “Sunny.”
Or: Sanji going back in time thanks to Ocean.

Someone had done their research on Usopp. They must’ve done a shit job, because they’d mistaken him as some kind of mutinous assassin and saboteur. Their goal is simple: stop the treaty of an island aligning with the World Government.
Kill one of the Straw Hats? Sure, would you like some pickles with your order?
Kidnap the sole ruler of the island and threaten him? Of course! That’s a normal Tuesday for Usopp!
Steal the treaty and burn it. Easy. Usopp has stolen thousands of important documents in his life.
These people mean business, and they’ve revealed their hand: they have Kaya, Ninjin, Piiman, and Tamanegi as hostages back in Syrup Village.
Suddenly, their orders are much harder for Usopp to ignore.

It’s overtaken his life; he’s become overwhelmingly distracted with it, worrying about when it will happen next, if Zoro is nearby, whether or not it has finally died down at all (it has yet to… not even once). The mere sight of the mossy deposits just floods him with the image of Zoro’s mossy hair, and his feelings slam into him tenfold every time.
He couldn’t accept that his feelings would never go away, though, because that meant really and truly he had no other choice but to just die.
And how ironic would it be for love, the thing he lives for, to be the thing that kills him?
