After the events of Season 2 of Good Omens. Aziraphale has been busy as the new Supreme Archangel, so busy that he barely has time to think. But it doesn't stop his mind from wandering, always seeming to land on the same name.
Crowley has been...less busy. He's been having quite a sulk until something strange pulls him out of it. And strange is never good.

Aziraphale is back on earth, only a year after he left. The title of "Supreme Archangel" has been cast far, far behind him. Crowley is beside himself, head over heels in love with Aziraphale, and Aziraphale is in love with Crowley. They both know this, it's old news by now.
But now they have a new normal. And this new normal can be hard to navigate.
And even worse, there's a vengeful angel roaming the earth, and god knows when he'll make himself known. Speaking of God, She's not talking either.

“Don’t mention it,” Crowley tried his best to scowl, but the bench was far too small, and he could feel the warm press of Aziraphale’s thigh against his, and it was hard to look at the piano keys when Aziraphale was right there, all sharp aftershave and burning grace. “I mean, don’t. We’d both be in trouble.”
Aziraphale’s gaze drifted down to Crowley’s hands. “Do I know this song?”

Or, in 1804, Aziraphale finds Crowley in the Gardens of Versailles. With the palace deserted after the French Revolution, Crowley tries out a few crown jewels in the bedroom, Aziraphale might or might not be the inspiration for a sculpture, and they break into the secret wine cellar for some secrets of their own.

Summary
Crowley folded his newspaper and accepted, with grim resignation, that he would have to try and save the world. It wasn’t that he particularly wanted to do it again; the first time had been bad enough and he’d needed an eleven-year-old to do the hard bit. He didn’t feel any kind of great love towards all living things at the moment, or have any heroic feelings. He simply knew that nobody else would do it.
And Aziraphale, who had stumbled his way into the centre of it all, would be trying desperately not to let it happen and failing, because Heaven wouldn’t let him succeed. One more time, and he resolved that it would be the very last time, Crowley would have to fix things for him.

There is something to be said for shades of gray and maybe, just maybe, the Metatron didn’t think through what it meant to separate them.
