    Summary

“So,” Robby says, dropping his work bag onto the bar chair, his long hands gripping the back of it as he looks at Jack.

The elation is still there, but dulled at the reality seeping in between them.

“So,” he says, putting his bag down as well.

“How does this work?” Robby asks and Jack can’t help but twist his lips a little in amusement.

“I don’t know. How do you want this to work?”

Or: how two people finally find their way to one another after so long, only to work through the growing pains of meshing their lives together

    Summary

It’s the spring of ‘97 when Michael Robinavitch is dragged into a gay bar for the very first time.

When he meets Jack Abbot there, the two of them are on the cusp of radically different futures: Robby is about to begin his residency, and Jack is leaving for the army. They know better than to get attached - know the timing is wrong, the goodbye inevitable - but something tender takes root anyway. Through every deployment, Jack thinks of Robby more than he ought to; through every failed relationship, Robby wonders about what might've been.

Years later, when their paths cross again at PTMC, the past resurfaces — and though they’re older, more jaded, and scarred in different ways, they find themselves pulled towards everything they left unfinished.

    Summary

"The long and short of it is, they want me over there for a couple months to teach a seminar.”

The kitchen is suddenly too quiet.

In the pan behind him mushrooms and onions sizzle, in the living room Santana plays softly over the speaker set they invested in, but all Robby can hear is the beat of his own heart between his ears.

Jack would be gone for months.

He hasn’t spent more than a handful of days without Jack in years.

(Or: Jack teaches in Germany for 120 days; Robby's totally fine about it.)

    Summary

“You might wanna stick with him.” Robby followed his line of sight, landing on Abbot across the hall as he dragged a hand over his face and lifted his eyes onto the ceiling, as if asking for strength from above.
    “Who? Abbot?”
“Yes, him. I see a lot of cocky wannabe doctors coming through these doors, but he’s the first one that can actually back it up. I think he could use someone more… level-headed too. You know, to balance things out.”
“I don’t know, sir…” Robby bit his cheek hesitantly.
‘Cocky’ wasn’t beginning to cover the guy’s attitude and Robby had a feeling that next time he would need even less of a talking-into to help with whatever crazy thing Abbot would get up to.

    Or

Some beginnings are easier than others and sometimes the road ahead is rockier than expected. Jack and Robby have a complicated history, spanning over two decades of loss and heartache, yet the one thing constant is their shared orbit.

    Summary

"Congrats again on the award; you deserve it." And with that, she disappeared into the crowd.

Probably off to go plan how to hit on Jack. Jack, who this random doctor wanted to have sex with. Here. At the conference.

Intellectually, Robby knew that was what people did at these things. Drunken hookups at conferences were common, though often denied, if not regretted. Robby had never partaken because that was not his speed, but Jack—

Well, Jack had no such qualms. And at an ED medical conference, he was basically a rockstar. He could probably have anyone he wanted.
