And then his life changed with a single gunshot, with a stain of a red he couldn't see spreading across his chest, and with a series of mysterious visions flitting before him as he lies, unconscious, in the hospital.

Canon divergence fic which begins in season 4 episode 8 'Pangs'. Instead of saving Buffy from the vengeance spirit of the Chumash tribe, Angel finds himself captured by the Initiative. Now he is the one who needs rescuing, but the gang don't even realise he is in Sunnydale... Between Cordelia's return; Xander's jealousy; Willow's broken heart; spells going awry; Buffy almost dating one of the commandos and Spike being a pain in the a**, they all need to find a way to work through their own stuff and band together to save the Dark Avenger from the clutches of the Government.

Summary
A crazy cult leader was dead, his main accomplices arrested, and one by one peggies were either shot down or met the same fate as their heralds. The valley was free, they’d fucking won. Not everything had gone to plan, but it was a hard fought victory, a satisfying victory. No last minute surprise apocalypses, no years spent in a bunker questioning actions done, just sweet relief of months of hell finally ending.
Then Asher Rook got sent into Witness Protection.
