    "Look," Hayden suddenly spoke. For whatever reason, he felt the pulling urge to help Marlow. He chalked it up to being a gossip, or something. It wasn't because he was scared his best friend was fucking the rival captain, and it definitely wasn't because he wanted to talk to Marlow more. "Give me your number, and we'll try and figure this whole thing out. I'll talk to the guys, and you talk to Rozanov. We'll tell each other what we notice. It can be this whole sleuth thing, just between us." Hayden realized that his proposition was oddly intimate. He blushed and choked out an awkward "if you want" to try and salvage some dignity, but it was redundant.

    Marlow looked at him amusedly before handing him his phone. There was a look in his eyes that Hayden couldn't quite read.

    Troy Barrett comes to Ottawa wanting stability. He tells himself he wants the team, the routine, the structure, the safety of fitting in without needing too much from anyone. This is his clean start, and he needs to do whatever it takes to keep it.

    What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.

    As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.

    After being outed and tripping on game 7, Shane wakes up in a hotel in Saskatchewan - confused and in a body that doesn’t fit him quite right, and his parents sleeping in the bed next to him.

    Despite confusion, he decides to do what he does best - go for a run and make a plan while he does it.

    1. It seems to be 2008, the exact day he met Ilya all those years ago
    2. He, possibly, has a chance to fall in love all over again
    3. There is no way in hell that he’ll spend another decade pining and yearning at long distance
    4. He has no clue how he is going to do it - but he’ll make sure Ilya Rozanov will be his, sooner rather than later this time around

    Shane returns to the hotel room a bit more with it, and now with a plan. To woo Ilya Rozanov at first sight and to, this time, win the prospect cup. However, a certain russian shaped wrench will be thrown in Shane’s thought out plans.

    Ilya didn’t know what Shane saw in him, but you can't just fall for a man you barely met. You can't just fall so deep and so quickly.

    Shane looked at him like devotion came naturally, like getting hurt was a price he was willing to pay. Ilya wanted to protect him from being hurt at all costs. But what if he was the one who did it?

    Shane went first in the draft, and then threw it away by choosing Ottawa.
    A bad team. A losing future. No Cups. No real rivalry.
    Ilya didn’t understand the decision. He refused to.
