Being kidnapped because of it isn't something he expected either.

"I'll see you at dinner! Lambad’s, 6:00. Don't be late!”
Kaveh is not there when Alhaitham arrives at Lambad's Tavern at 5:59 sharp.
Alhaitham sits in their usual booth alone until the tavern closes, drawing concerned and pitied whispers from patrons and wait staff alike. It's clear that, despite his fame and status, their Acting Grand Sage has been stood up by whoever was supposed to be joining him for dinner and drinks.
Kaveh is not in his room either when Alhaitham returns home, confused and more than a little annoyed at being left alone for an evening meant to be shared.
The moon is high in the sky, Sumeru City is sleeping peacefully, and yet there is still no Kaveh.

That is why, when the Matra informed him of his roommate's failure to appear at a conference that morning, Alhaitham knew right away that it was no ordinary occurrence.
(an AU in which Alhaitham decides that the Matra simply are not fast enough at investigating Sumeru's most high-profile kidnapping case, and decides to rescue his roommate himself.)

He loves Kaveh like a balm to his soul, an essence of feeling that Alhaitham would rarely get to feel. He loves Kaveh like the sun through the window in the mornings, the light casted against blond hair and a sleeping face that takes his breath and leaves him with a late start to his day, unable to move and risk taking his eyes off the most beautiful thing in Sumeru.
