Summary
In Westeros it is common for most noblemen to become squires and then knights. The squire is both assistant and apprentice to the knight. The elder man is expected to continue weapons study, teach him the chivalric code, and most importantly educate the squire in the matters of battle (and political) strategy.
Lucerys Targaryen, the second son of Queen Rhaenyra, has recently turned 17 and is eligible to be a squire. The bonds between knight and squire are as influential as marriages in Westeros, especially those involving the royal family. In order to keep her half brother, Prince Aemond “One-Eye”, in the fold, the Queen proposes (orders) that he take her second son, Lucerys, as his squire. The two princes have not spoken in years after a dangerous night that leaves Aemond with one eye, but they will soon find themselves entangled in something much greater.
