Whatever small solace that was, they had it: that any attempt at attribution for the state they found themselves in lay solely at their hands. It wasn't the most pleasant of arrangements, all in all: but it worked reasonably enough for her, and Sergei certainly seemed to be under the impression it worked well enough for him.
