Lucanis Dellamorte sat on the edge of the couch, his posture straight, his dark, piercing eyes fixed on the woman beside him. His dark hair, slightly tousled, gave him an effortlessly refined appearance, as though he hadn’t given it a thought. His presence, as always, felt unshakable calm, controlled, and ever so slightly intimidating.

“You’re still cold, somehow,” he murmured, his mouth curving in amusement against her flesh, though the attempt to change the subject was so transparent she nearly laughed. His eyes sought hers as he pecked a tiny kiss to the very tip, and they were rapidly becoming molten. The stirrings of his interest pressed into her thigh. “Allow me to warm you properly?”
“You’re being cagey, Lucanis.”
He sighed. “You keep bringing up things I’d prefer not to talk about, especially in our bed. I’m improvising.”
“If you think this will make me forget the topic, you’re sadly mistaken,” she said, though a small grin tugged at her lips.
“Would you like to test that theory?” he asked, his voice such a deep rumble she felt it where his chest pressed against hers, and it drew a small noise of want from her lips. She couldn’t help the nod she gave him, much to her own chagrin.
His own grin was devastating, then he was gone beneath the blankets, his hands bunching up the long nightgown around her hips.-----
New to life together at the Villa, Rook and Lucanis unwind at the end of a long day, and talk about their respective holiday traditions.

He finds a dagger nestled inside the package. It’s well-made but unassuming, one of a thousand hidden up the sleeves of Crows across the continent. He can tell it was cleaned in a hurry, the surface smeared with a thin sheen of crimson and something darker– a cheap poison he surmises. The good ones don’t leave a stain. His fingers stop as he touches the serrated edge. He knows the pattern. He’d traced the exact scar over Phyrra’s shoulder the last time she’d come to his bed. She hadn’t seen who’d attacked her, just heard their screams as she’d shoved them from Minrathous’ city walls.
Spite inhales. “Smells like. Deathroot. Iron.” His sharp eyes narrow, snapping to Illario again. “Rook.”
Lucanis tightens his fist over the handle. “Who was it?”
“One of the lower Houses took the contract. None of the Talons would ever accept that- at least for now.” Another whimper comes through the cellar door. Illario kicks it harder. “I’m holding onto the specific details until I know you’re not going to do something stupid.”

He surged from his chair, taking the choice from one victor, giving it to the other.
One addiction after all was far kinder, far gentler.
“Can I touch you?” was out of him before he could preface it, arrange it to be better-worded.
