Summary
“Speaking of…you got any idea what this lunch is about? She was pretty vague when she called.”
Buck paused, then he shook his head, a small frown pulling between his brows. “Nope. Not a clue.”
“But you’re worried,” Eddie guessed.
Buck gave a half-shrug, trying for casual, though his hand lingered at Tori’s side like the contact grounded him. “Maddie doesn’t usually do vague. If she says she wants to talk, she wants to talk.”
Tori let out a babble just then, saving him from saying more. Buck leaned down, pressing a kiss to the top of her head before scooping her into his arms. “Guess we’ll find out soon enough.”
Eddie studied him for a moment.
Buck’s answering smile was soft but a little distracted, like his mind was already skipping ahead to lunch.
And Eddie couldn’t shake the feeling that Maddie’s words would upend the equilibrium they’d worked so hard to hold.
Or, After years of chaos, they’ve built a life full of love and family, but a hidden secret from Buck’s past threatens their fragile peace. When the past collides with the present, even the happiest home feels uncertain.

Summary
Eddie says, “The brownies are good, Buck. And you didn’t even have to get a hint from someone in your attic this time.”
Buck smiles at him, so at least Eddie can still do one thing right.
That feeling lasts through their next call, and the next, and then it all goes to hell.
It’s a call at a church, which feels a little on the nose. Some kid crawled onto the roof through the bell tower; Buck is harnessed up there and getting the kid down.
Eddie is on the ground. Buck’s foot slips.

Summary
“Can you look at me, please?”
Eddie asks so sweetly that Buck doesn’t have the heart to deny him. He turns his head to the side so he’s looking at Eddie, and he lets his eyelids flutter open. He’s instantly met with Eddie’s warm, chestnut gaze, and it soothes some of the panic in Buck’s chest. Eases some of the hurting in his bones.
“There you are,” Eddie whispers. “I don’t like it when you hide from me.”

Believe it or not, they’d prepared for this very instance.
But that didn’t make seeing Buck’s hands shake any easier.
