Summary
Stede has smiled at me many times during our time together. There was the first smile on the Spanish warship that captivated me from the very start. There was the sweet, genuine smile from the night he told me I wear fine things well that turned my whole world upside down. There was the astonished smile from the first fuckery, then the reassuring smile as he told me he was my friend in the bathtub. There was the joyful smile from the petrified orange, and the delighted smile from when we said “co-captain” at the same time. And of course there have been countless little happy smiles throughout each day we’ve spent together that never fail to set my heart on fire.
But this… This smile is new and it’s the best one yet by a long shot. Stede’s eyes are wide with delight, surprise, and relief, and his mouth is agape with a broad grin. He looks as if he’d hoped with every ounce of him that I would be there, and I was. He’s smiling at me like I’m the most miraculous thing he’s ever seen.
“Ed.”
With that glorious and miraculous smile, Stede says my name, exhaling it out like a sigh of relief, and I feel like I’ve died and come back to life.
