It was the limp hand that seemed to make it all click. The familiar fingers and skin.
He stopped walking forward, body now cold in every place, feet frozen to where they were. Every breath he had just been taking was now harder, sharper. Breathing felt like a foreign concept, unknown to the Paladin now.
The sword slipped from his hand, bouncing off the concrete and shattering the fragile silence they had all made when Hopper arrived. Mike barely registered it.

“It was violent. Just like him. Exactly how he does it,” he says, his voice unbelievably small, like he’s disappointed in himself. Which is strange, because Mike has never felt more proud of anyone in his entire life.
“You would never hurt even a fly,” Mike says. “I know you wouldn’t even hurt those monsters if you didn’t have to. You’re different. I've known you for as long as I remember being alive, Will.” His voice softens even more, like he needs Will to hear it, to believe it, because he means every word.
