Rain batters the top of the car, the sound closer to hail than rain. Jim trembles helplessly, a mixture of lingering fear and cold, body curled up in the backseat of the old station wagon. His jeans and shirt are wet through, feet cold and bare, soaked shoes and socks in the footwell. His hair drips icy water onto the back of his neck. Jim stares resolutely towards the expansive blackness on display through the windshield as he listens to John shift beside him. One of his hands is rummaging around in the trunk, the other is wrapped around the pistol.
