Vi ignored him as movement outside the window caught her eye and she leaned over to see what it was. Her neighbor looked up, their eyes meeting for a brief second. A scowl appeared on the young woman’s face and Vi quickly moved away from the window and took her seat again at the drumset.
“Fuck me,” she mumbled.
Ever since her neighbor had moved in a couple of months ago, it had been nothing but complaint, complaint, complaint. She hated Vi’s music, she hated her friends. She hated the way Vi’s cooking smelled (when she had the misfortune of burning it once or twice). She had threatened to call the landlord when Vi flipped her off after a petty argument about whose responsibility it was to bring the trash cans to the curb. Vi couldn’t stand her.- Language:

“Please, Caitlyn,” Vi whispers. The levity doesn’t last long. She’s begging, pleading, holding the glass an inch from Caitlyn’s dry, cracked lips. “I need you to—shit, I just need you. Everything’s so fucked up. I’ve come back to a world I wish I didn’t recognise, and everything’s gone. Everything and everyone. And then you, you appeared out of nowhere, like there’s still some good left in this shitty, uncaring world, and I just—please. Just a sip. For me?”
Caitlyn’s eyes focus on the still water within the glass. Vi presses the chipped rim to Caitlyn’s mouth and tilts it back, water touching her lips, and Caitlyn finally moves.
Lifting a hand, she knocks the glass across the room. It shatters into three large pieces and a thousand tiny shards.
Vi lifts her hands. She wants to curl them into fists, to beat the ground, to twist them in her hair and scream; she wants to cradle Caitlyn’s face, letting her feel the gentle warmth on the dirt covering her skin, and the skin beneath the dirt.

She observed the other patrons of the establishment. None of them seemed to be in a hurry to make a move. The relief she felt at that was almost crushing in its intensity. She shouldn’t be that invested after only just discovering her.

Or maybe it’s the way that Cait’s fingers are digging into her hipbones, desperate. She tilts her chin up petulantly.

The offer hangs in the air. Caitlyn’s face is flushed, but Vi doesn’t question her. There’s no fun in trying to pry out whatever Caitlyn’s hiding; she always gives in too easily.
“Uh-huh,” Vi says.

Vi’s voice sounds blissful, awed, and Caitlyn grins against the rumpled sheets of her bed. She finds the strength to raise her head enough to nudge Vi’s shoulder with her nose, then gently bites her skin, teasing. Vi lets out a groan and curls closer, skin brushing skin, and Cait moves closer too, nestling her face in the crook of Vi’s neck. She’s so warm, so strong, so soft. Cait never wants to move again.
“I can’t believe you thought I was straight,” she chuckles, while pressing a light line of kisses alongside Vi’s neck.

So, she’d taken one step at a time until she was down the hall and in the elevator. Had stood with the woman and the burly guard who’d walloped her good so many times over the years.
When she’d been given new clothes to wear, been given her release forms, all Vi could do was stare at the woman. Stare at her long and hard, unable to comprehend why she had actually gone and gotten her out.
She never got her answer—not verbally, but Vi knew.
Knew that Caitlyn Kiramman had, inadvertently, saved her life.

It was quiet out. No soldiers running through the streets, no doors opening and closing in the Kiramman household, no hushed, passionate conversations happening beyond the doors to Caitlyn’s room. Just the soft, steady sound of Caitlyn breathing next to Vi. As usual, Vi was awake long past midnight, her heart thumping in her chest and guilt sitting like a bomb in her stomach. It had been days since she’d helped Caitlyn home after the explosion at the council building, days more since the funeral, days since she’d dressed in a plain black shirt and slacks that cost more than anything she’d ever owned in her life and watched Caitlyn and her father grieve by her mother’s graveside. The weight of her guilt didn’t seem to be easing at all. Every time Vi thought she had a handle on it, Caitlyn would reach for her hand or lean her head against her shoulder and she’d be right back where she started, steeped in guilt and self-hatred.

Vi doesn't tease her for it though, just presses a kiss to her shoulder and blinks down at Caitlyn through her lashes. There's always this shift when she goes from fucking with Caitlyn, to about to fuck Caitlyn, and it's not something Caitlyn can describe properly or put into words, but her body feels it like a sixth sense. It's like how a prey knows it's being hunted even if it can't see the predator. The air feels different on her skin; the world slows down around her; all she can think about is Vi and her voice and her mouth.
