Percy was barely a year old when Sally knew he was going to be a handful. It wasn't for the usual reasons; he was largely a quiet child, looking out at the world with a curiosity and mischievousness that reminded her so much of his father that it hurt. It was the other things, like how Sally could swear he could see every monster and mythical creature around them, as if he knew something she didn't—as unlikely as that sounded—or how the last time they went to the sea, he cried so loudly with glee it drenched them both with sea water.

Percy and Annabeth took to taking long walks across the beach the summer they defeated the Titans. It wasn't a conscious decision on either of their parts—Percy liked to feel the sea breeze in his hair, liked to feel as close to Poseidon as possible in the moments he could. Besides, the death of Luke—the deaths of everyone he couldn't save weighed on him heavily, and the sea had always been the one thing that calmed him when the nightmares got too heavy, even when he was a child.
