There was no enemy here, no danger they could fight with their swords. If they were dying, suffocating, going mad, what was the defense?
He stumbled toward her, and as he did, the roots changed again, spreading across the floor, making a mat, a cradle, a softly inviting bed. Brienne reached out her arms to him.

Anthony glanced at his brother, who had been uncharacteristically stationed along the wall of the ballroom for the entire night. Well, it would have been uncharacteristic if he hadn’t done the same for the last two balls. Not dancing, not talking to anyone – Colin’s eyes were fixed unerringly on one target as she moved around the room.
His concentration was intense enough that he didn’t seem to notice – or perhaps didn’t care – as Anthony sidled up to him until the Viscount cleared his throat. “Colin,” he began.
“Yes. What is it, Anthony?”
“You’re not – courting, are you? Miss Featherington?” He’d already been surprised by his brother’s romantic and impulsive nature once. He’d prefer to at least have a little warning if it was about to strike again.

Penelope had grown accustomed to the chaos of Bridgerton family dinners by now. After the time Gregory accidentally set the table on fire in his excitement over Kate going into labor, she thought she had become truly prepared for anything.
She had been wrong. So very, very wrong.
The most pressing issue was the fact that she shouldn’t be at this particular dinner. At least not this version of her. She could see her 17-year-old self gaping in her direction, just as stunned as the rest of the invited guests, which included her mother, her deceased father, her sisters… Marina. After all, this was the night that the Featheringtons and the Bridgertons had come together to celebrate Colin’s rather-sudden first engagement.
She remembered the evening well. In excruciating detail, in fact. How handsome Colin looked. How doting he’d been to his fiancé. How silently Pen had been screaming the entire night, just hoping someone would hear her. She distinctly did not remember some future version of herself barging in during the main course, with a sleeping two-year-old in her arms.

“Yes, Anthony, what is it?” the more-familiar Colin asked impatiently before he caught sight of his double, and his neck whipped around. “You’re –”
“You,” the older Colin agreed, his forehead furrowing as he took in his other self. Standing across from each other, their differences were even more apparent. “As I think you’ve surmised by now, I’m the same Colin you know – only misplaced a little. By about three years, based on the context.”

He's not even sure she's aware of it. Jaime has to strain to hear her as she hums under her breath.
It's a curiously sweet melody. Wistful. Probably some song about thwarted love that only the homely giants on her insignificant rock would know.

“Captain Tarth,” Stark interrupted, an emotion in his eyes that Jaime couldn't parse out. The Colonel’s scent flared, nervous. “She goes by the call sign Ace of Hearts, correct?”
“She does…she did.” Jaime forced the words from his throat.
He had given her the name at the end of fighter training, part jest and part brutal honesty. Brienne was an ace pilot, deadly with a shot. She’d gone on to rack up more enemy downs than anyone else in the squadron. The heart part he’d added as a joke.
From the point of view of someone who’d just met her, Brienne had seemed totally unappealing as a mate: intimidating in stature and plain featured, unrelentingly forthright, uninterested in playing nice, or coy, or cute. Her bland beta scent had only reinforced the complete lack of appeal.
Irony was a godsdamned bitch. The only heart Brienne had claimed was his.
