Mike looked back towards Will and he became suddenly aware of just how close they were sitting. He wasn’t sure whether he’d landed closer to Mike when he was tugged back down from standing, or whether Mike had shifted closer as he’d turned to face him, but what he did know was that Mike was sitting there, staring down at him with his stupid puppy-dog eyes and his fingers slowly drifting up Will’s arm towards his bicep, carelessly ignoring the fact that Will had spent the last year of his life trying to get over him.
“Will…” Mike said, and it sounded very much like pleading.
or: An impending mission the next day prompts Mike to think about some things more clearly. Will has a hard time understanding.

“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

Summary
In the end, it doesn’t matter. None of it fucking matters. Because what’s really in control is the tension. This elusive string tied between their chests that’s always changing length. Right now it’s so short and taught and strong that Will can’t imagine resisting it. So really, it was never a matter of if he would. Just when. When will he fold? When will he let go and let himself follow Mike into the water?
He dares to glance down at his knees, where he can see Mike’s fingers peeking out from behind his calves (as if he needed that visual reminder that they’re touching), and then back up to meet Mike’s expectant gaze.
He’s going to do it. He’s such a fucking idiot.
OR
Mike & Will have a long overdue conversation on the way back to Hawkins— by, in, and around a random motel pool.
