She offers Aki a wave and her best dimpled grin, but the scowl on his face just goes deeper.
The cigarette between his lips burns up red with his inhale. He tosses it on the ground, grinds it under his heel and meets her eyes. “You still haven’t quit.” The same greeting he gives her on each of their shifts together. Simple, matter-of-fact. He begins walking an even, long-legged stride that she nearly has to jog to keep up with.
It’s not a question but she answers it anyway. “Nope.” Her mouth pops at the ‘p.’ “Can’t afford it, ‘sides, if I quit, I wouldn’t get to see your cute face every day, would I?”
Did the tips of his ears go pink? She squints in the morning light and chalks it up to a sleep-deprivation-induced hallucination. He clears his throat. “You’re an idiot.”
