... with assistance from a less than pleased Yiling Patriarch who was very busy being dead, thanks for asking. Except, of course, nobody did ask. And now he's sharing a body with Mo Xuanyu because Wei Wuxian is a fool with a bleeding heart for any kicked puppy-looking kind of guy he came across. Well, Wei Wuxian will be damned again if he was going to be the one stuck cleaning up someone else's mess. He had nothing to do with any of this. He's been dead for thirteen years after all!
Or, the one where Wei Wuxian goes 'nah, bro, I ain't doing that' and ends up taking in a student... in a weird sort of way.
No reading of the prequels necessary for this story!

He did not raise his head, but only blinked once, slowly, not even trying to talk through the silencing spell as he usually did. Rarely, in either of his lives, had Lan Wangji seen Wei Wuxian this still, this quiet. Seized by a sudden impulse, he stepped toward him and ran his fingers down the side of his face. On his knees, Wei Wuxian shuddered slightly, but made no attempt to move.
It was ungentlemanly to attack an incapacitated opponent.
Wei Ying had never asked him to be a gentleman.
Sometimes on a night hunt, you have to tie up your husband.

It doesn't hit Wei Ying until the third time it happens. In his defense, he's not running on all cylinders, and definitely only on four hours of sleep. So if all he's noticed about the guy sharing the elevator with him for the third time in two weeks is his hotness, who can really blame him?
But now that he's looking a bit more closely, as the guy stares resolutely at the number display ticking up, he sees the telltale signs: slightly rumpled collar on an otherwise pristine outfit, bags under his eyes—not so noticeable that they are instantly apparent, but there if you look closely enough—kiss-bitten lips, and (the most damning evidence of all) a hickey blooming just under his ear.
This guy is coming back from a hookup of his own.

Summary
Xuanyu froze as his husband gently, oh-so-gently touched his jaw and tilted his head to the side, and then tucked a stray hair behind Xuanyu's ear. His half-bun had become a messy thing during the course of their afternoon, and Xuanyu saw Wei Wuxian move and then felt him touch between Xuanyu's shoulder blades once before fingers moved to tug at his ribbon. His hair released from its hold, and Wei Wuxian hummed a familiar melody while he started finger-combing and retying it, while Lan Wangji barely-touched his jaw in a gentle cradle to keep Xuanyu's head from turning.
Lan Wangji's -- his beautiful, beautiful husband's -- fingers crept from Xuanyu's jaw to his tied-up hair, meeting Wei Wuxian's fingers there. Neither set of hands were moving in any way other than cradling Mo Xuanyu between them, not tugging nor pulling him into any direction. Xuanyu's own hands were fisted in his robes.
Xuanyu took an uneven breath before he leaned forwards, ever-so-slightly. When no objections came from the hands in his hair, he did it again, only stopping when warm breath hit his face.

“I…” Wei Wuxian pauses again, swallowing. Lan Zhan’s gaze softens, and he takes one of Wei Wuxian’s hands in his own, a gentle reassurance. Take your time, the gesture says, I am here for you whenever you are ready.
“Lan Jingyi,” he finally manages, with a shaky breath, “reminded me that I… that I could. Wear white. For mourning. I never did my one hundred days of mourning for… for shijie, for Wen Qing.”
Lan Zhan makes a little noise in the back of his throat.
“I didn’t…” Wei Wuxian inhales, exhales. Breathe. “I had never… thought about that. I don’t remember being dead, Lan Zhan. It feels like… like three weeks ago, I woke up to Wen Qing and Wen Ning gone. Three weeks since shijie took that blade for me. Since… and it hasn’t been three weeks, but I…”
