Megumi rolls his eyes at the remark and Tsumiki laughs at him, a gentle, warm sound. She reaches over then, one hand lifting from Kuro to place itself on top of Megumi’s hair. She ruffles his dark strands, laughs a little more as he scowls and tries to lean away from her touch.
“Good boy,” she says and pulls her hand back. Megumi tries to fight the blood that he feels rising to the surface of the skin under but there’s no use. It spreads like wildfire, from his ears to the apples of his cheek.
Perhaps he can blame it on the sun.
or, Megumi gets to be Tsumiki's puppy.

Andrew gets his answer when he arrives home after his shift. “I’m home,” he announces as he normally does, not expecting a response because no one ever gave enough of a fuck to give him one, even if they were home. He doesn’t get a response, but he is greeted with a scene so strange that it roots Andrew in place the moment that he opens the door. He finds himself staring, standing in the doorway as his brain struggles to comprehend just what the fuck he is witnessing.
His childhood best friend is sitting on the living room couch beside Ashley. His arm is thrown across the couch—so close to his sister’s shoulders that Andrew nearly drops all of the textbooks in his hands.
His friend is in his house.
Why?
And why the fuck is he with Ashley?
In which, Ashley befriends an old friend of Andrew's, and Andrew responds very normally.

It’s all smoke and mirrors—illusions and tricks that he sells to the world like some sort of fucked up magician. Or a con artist—Andrew thinks that’s a more apt comparison. He’s good at it, too.
Pretending came as naturally as breathing at this point. He can be anything that anyone wants him to be, even if he would love nothing more than to take a bat to the back of their skull and bash their fucking brains in until their face remained nothing but an unrecognizable red mush. They’d never know.
He’s that good.
Andrew knows the rot is there, though. He can always feel it—sloshing around in his insides like thick black sludge. Not quite like a tar pit, but something close to one. It builds in his lungs like the smoke that he blackens them with until he is choking on it, until he feels like it’s going to explode out of his fucking chest. Those days are the worst, when it’s nearly impossible to keep it together, when the staples holding his chest together burst apart and the festering rot pours out.
Ashley is always harder to ignore on those days.

Una serata apparentemente come tante se non fosse stato che Fabrizio attendeva quel momento ormai da mesi. Inseguimenti per mezza Europa, appostamenti sotto la pioggia in vicoli bui e maleodoranti mentre il freddo lo tediava pungendolo fin dentro le ossa, domande su domande e tracce che non sembravano portare mai a nulla, ma poi, eccolo lì. L'aveva finalmente trovato. Avrebbe potuto essere la migliore o la peggiore nottata della sua vita. Ciò non toglieva che avrebbe fatto di tutto pur di arrivare all'obiettivo che si era posto e a cui aveva dedicato così tanti sforzi.

Ci pensa da ore: ci pensa da quell'ordine, da quando al suo “Sbottonati” lo sguardo di Ermal non si era accigliato, e le sue mani erano corse a liberare il bottone dall'asola. Il pensiero gli è rimasto a premere sulle tempie per tutto il tempo delle votazioni, quando l'aveva visto sbottonare persino la camicia, il fianco che premeva mollemente contro il suo; e ha continuato anche dopo, a sbattergli nel cranio al ritmo della musica troppo alta nella green room.
E così, “Spogliati” gli ha detto, e non è un ordine, non proprio, ma non è nemmeno un suggerimento. Ha immaginato a lungo le risposte che avrebbe potuto scatenare, dalle sopracciglia inarcate -ché ad Ermal non si può imporre proprio un bel niente, lo sa bene, o deciderà di fare il bastian contrario della situazione- ad una risata ad una battuta -“Spogliati tu” è la replica che ha immaginato come più probabile. In ogni caso, qualunque sia il risultato, è piuttosto sicuro non cambi la situazione finale -loro due, appagati, tra le lenzuola non più tanto candide- quindi non si dà pena: almeno ci ha provato.
